Ferriday Thermal Inlet & Exhaust Gaskets

Post by Mitus »

I have been in touch with Ferriday Engineering as I wanted to purchase both an inlet and exhaust gasket for my 2 Rover powered vehicles. On the website they mention discounts for buying in bulk so I've enquired about this as I thought it could be a good group buy opportunity. So normal price for an inlet gasket* is £43 and an exhaust plate** is £46. Buying 6 or more the prices come down to £29 & £32 respectively and buying 10 or more prices are £25 & £28 respectively which I thought was a pretty good deal.

The link explains what their purpose is but the general jist is that the inlet gasket helps prevent heat from the cylinder head soaking into the inlet manifold (and thus warming up your incoming air) and the exhaust plate does the same by keeping exhaust manifold temperature away from the cylinder head.

*I enquired about the 5mm gasket, but they also do a 7mm one - I can get prices on these too.
**As explained on the site, the exhaust plate is not a gasket, it is to be used in conjunction with the standard gasket to form a seal. I will also ask about the suitability of the "proper" T-Series Turbo exhaust manifold gaskets with the fire rings as it may be that the foil type is sufficient or perhaps even better suited to use with the thermal exhaust plate.

Inlet gaskets available:
A Series (combined)
K Series VVC
M Series
T Series

Exhaust plates available:
A Series (combined)
K Series
L series
M series
T series
V8

The discount applies to total number of gaskets ordered in any combination, so as I'm ordering 4 for myself I don't think it will take too much to get the 10+ rate. Please also factor in £5 P&P. If you're interested please post up a reply saying what you'd like, the "default" for an inlet will be 5mm, so please state if you want the 7mm version. Once there are 10+ I'd like to start taking a 20-25% deposit - by this I mean 20% rounded up to the nearest pound as it will be easier for me to follow :P I'm intending to let this run for a month to give people plenty of time to see it, so the closing date is Friday 21st November. Please aim to be fully paid up by this date too, I will give people a nudge on the Monday beforehand! Order will be placed on Monday 24th and I expect to have them by Friday 28th. My first opportunity to post them out will be Wednesday 3rd December, so they'll make a nice xmas present!

EDIT:
The 7mm gasket will be £10 more, so we're looking at £35 as we now have over 10 orders. Yes, the difference is that it's 2mm thicker  So it should do a better job than the 5mm version. HOWEVER, one thing to bear in mind with the T-Series is those two brackets that brace between the manifold and the cam cover - the thicker gaskets are going to push the manifold away from them. My intention was to either slot the brackets so they slide back further or have some 5mm thick spacers welded to the manifold to close the gap back up. Washers and longer bolts will do the same job, but won't look as neat :P Either way, there's a small issue there and I thought it would be easier/neater to correct if using the 5mm gasket, but it's up to you!
As for the exhaust plates, Mike from Ferriday has said that using the fire ringed gasket may put indents in the TEP material and so it may be better to use the foil type. My 2p worth -if you're only ever going to use the fire ring type and have more faith in it sealing, then use it. I think the issue would be that IF it was to put indents in the TEP and you then tried to use a foil gasket afterwards (because you'd disturbed the joint for some other reason) then the indents may contribute to a leak. But if you were to use a fire ring type again, the indents would be sealed with the new fire rings. Similarly, if you've never had an issue with the foil type, there should be no reason for it not to seal against the TEP in the same way that it does to the head. I'm going to check my gasket drawer and use whatever I have!

Cheers
Andy

First post edited to clarify some things.

Many thanks to David-Ti, you're doing a grand job keeping the list in order :D I forgot to get the ball rolling by putting my own order at the start

As we're over the 10 order threshold now could I start taking some deposits please? These will be £5 for a 5mm inlet, £7 for a 7mm inlet and £6 for an exhaust. Either a Paypal gift to andy.pawlik@fsmail.net or a bank transfer to Mr A Pawlik, S/C 09-01-28, A/C 66772706 - in either case please put your RT username as a reference.

Thank you!

So far charliecosworth has overpaid by £1 and Allanwarnock has underpaid £1, so it's balanced out  I will post up correct outstanding balances for everyone closer to ordering time :)

Is the L series one a combined inlet and exhaust one like the original gasket?

Have asked the question and yes it is. It is made from the exhaust plate material and costs the same (£28) but you do have to use a standard gasket on both sides of it as opposed to just the manifold side.

I don't see the point in the exhaust one as the heat is coming from the head in the first place and the temperature would equalise after time, the head being hotter than the manifold in the first place.
As for the inlet, would it really make a huge difference ?

My stainless manifold is considerably hotter than the head so any form of heat proofing I'm sure will be beneficial as for the inlet I'm sure mitus will confirm this will benefit other than not using the thermal gasket

The pistons/cylinders are cooled from above by the incoming fuel/air mix, and from the bottom by oil - the exhaust manifold only ever sees the heat from combustion and isn't cooled by anything. From personal experience, I had pre-ignition on the Mini when it was mapped because the cylinders were staying too hot. This was mainly due to the design of my exhaust manifold not promoting gas flow away from the head. I will be addressing this issue also, but this thermal exhaust plate is an additional step to help matters.
With the inlet, no, it's not going to make a HUGE difference, but every little helps, right? Bigger intercoolers are a popular modification to cool down air before it enters the engine. The thermal inlet gasket is going to help keep the air as cool as possible, for as long as possible.
