Brembodge Group Buy 2

Hello and welcome to our second ‘Brembodge’ GB.

Image

Please can I draw your attention to the requirements to pay a 10% deposit to secure interest in the group buy as per the information listed below. This is not optional. Thanks.

Following the success of the first group buy thread, there has been sufficient public and private interest in a second kit to warrant another group buy. Please note, there will almost certainly be no further group buys following on from this, so if you missed the first, don’t miss this one – you can thank those who took part in the first for making this one happen! The kits will still be available on a one-off basis, but a higher premium will be commanded as we lose the bulk-buying power and the logistics become uneconomical.

(The GB1 will give you an idea of how things progress through the GB. Found here. If you are not familiar with this brake kit then please pop along and read the first GB thread as the tech info is the same. I would ask you to post only in the GB thread you are involved in to avoid confusing either issue. Rob and I will deal with the queries in the relative threads.)

The Background
The original thread for the design and fitment of the kit can be found in the Projects forum thread here. After significant interest, Group Buy the first was launched, in which more than 15 people signed up for some Brembo action on their R8s, ZRs and ZSs.

Having done the first run, proved all the contacts and processes, the minimum quantity of people necessary to do a further GB would be 8 parties. Any fewer than this and it’s just not feasible I’m afraid and we’re back into the realms of one-offs. Sorry, but we did make it clear in GB1 to get on board early!

As before the kit contains everything you need except a pair of calipers and your choice of pad. There are two options – a plain disc and a grooved disc.

Here are some examples of the fitted kits from the first GB, including our own:

What kind of price are we talking?

Following the completion of GB1 we’ve considered and adjusted the pricing as follows.

£243 for the plain disc kit (plus £10 postage)
£279 for the grooved disc kit (plus £10 postage)

If we get significantly more interest than 8 pairs, we may be able to negotiate a better price, however this would be the maximum kit cost.

This price is obviously slightly higher than GB1, but it’s also a reward for the people who helped us get GB1 off the ground. Without them, GB2 wouldn’t exist full stop. :)

What do I need to do if I want in?

Add your name down to start with. Please copy and paste this part adding yourself to the list with the kit you'd like (type of disc and either R8/ZR/ZS).

Once you've added your name to the list, a 10% non-refundable* deposit is needed in order to deter timewasters and dreamers. It enables us to get the longer lead time items on order ahead of the game.
(* In the event the GB does not proceed, deposits would be returned on the cancellation of the GB)

IMPORTANT: Please, after adding your name to the list, PM me with the following:
- Your name
- Your full address
- Your email address
- Your contact telephone number
- Your intended method of 90% payment (Note: 10% Deposit needs to be bank transfer or cheque)
- Delivery or Collection

Please note: Bank Transfer is the required method of payment. In exceptional circumstances (ie you live in New Zealand) you can pay through Paypal but please agree with me first. Other methods are cash in person, cheque via post, gold bullion but sadly not Mars bars.

We'll aim to finish Group Buy on the 30th June so please budget the remaining 90% payment into that timescale, to be collected in the period June 15th to June 30th, however you can pay 100% upfront if you prefer as several GB1 parties elected to.

This kit will fit ZR/ZS in addition to the R8. The only differences are the caliper is spaced off the bracket by 2mm, requiring different lengths on two of the bolts. Therefore please state the car it's intended for on the list.in the following format:

ttrw2 - 1994 Rover 220 Turbo

What do I get in this Group Buy?
In order to fit these to your MG Rover, the group buy will supply:

• 2 x caliper brackets (one per side) – machined, drilled, tapped, powder-coated.
• 2 x disc – machined with correct PCD and c/bore.
• 8 x grade 10.9 high-tensile M12 bolts (4 per side)
• 2 x stainless brake banjo (all that's required for your current brake lines to fit)
• 4 x copper washers for brake banjo.
• 8 x stainless washers (to go under each bolt head)
• 4 x shims (enables offset correction between R8 and ZR/ZS/bubble hub)

Image
Image

What do I NOT get in this Group Buy?

You will need to get your own:

• Calipers – Brembo Peugeot 406 ones. (Sadly not Fiat, Ford, Alfa)
• Pads – for above calipers (lots and lots of choice!)

How much do you reckon it'll all cost?
Potentially, the whole setup for £321:

Either £243 for plain disc kit or £279 for the grooved kit plus your calipers and pads. 2nd hand calipers have been bought for anything between £46/pair and £200/pair recently. Ebay prices seem to be the highest, breakers the lowest. The calipers are £370ish from Peugeot brand new. Don't be put off by calipers requiring an overhaul it's really quite easy. I did a guide here to a quick and easy cost-effective refurb, or you can go the whole hog and refurbish them as Tom Pinney did for the first group buy – info here.

Pads cost anything from £32/set for EBC black stuff to £210 for Carbotech XP8s. We recommend using a thread-locker for bolting up the caliper-bracket, something like Loctite 243 which is about £4 from ebay.

£243 (plain kit) plus £46 (v cheap calipers) plus £32 (pads) is £321.

Some Considerations:
Bear in mind the discs are 326mm (just under 13”). You’re likely to need 17” wheels to cover the setup. (Some generous 16’s may fit, and we’re keen to let you try them – I’m thinking along the lines of the Speedline Mistral Roversport Wheels and Team Dynamics Pro Race II). The most important thing is the shape of your spokes, this will determine if you need to run spacers. If you have any doubts, Rob would be more than happy to let you try your wheels over his setup. This will enable you to see if you need to run a small spacer or not. Failing that, try to provide us with an accurate measurement of your spokes relative to the hub face as detailed in Rob’s project thread, on this page.

Wheels known to fit over them so far are:
- Rob’s 17” OZ Superleggera (ET38)
- My 17” League Tantrums (ET40)
- Tom Pinney’s TSW’s [ET35]
- 1994 BRG Coupe’s TSW’s
- Kevin’s Team Dynamics (Monzas?)
- Sc4mpi’s Team Dynamics Pro Race 2’s

Wheels known to need a spacer:
- MG ZS Mk2 11 Spoke Alloys (5mm)
- MG ZR/S Straights (5mm)

If lots of people need spacers Rob can get some machined-up for £20/pair upto 5mm thick, or see here (mitus diy ones) Mitus has a GB running for 6mm hubcentrics in this forum. :)

How/When would I pay?
10% as soon as you've got your name on the list. Remainder by the 30th June.

What feedback have you been given?

Some of the customers who fitted their kit from GB1 seem happy enough!
tompinney wrote:I have done total of about 300 miles on the new brakes and pedal feel and pad bite has got progressively better the more I've driven it, and is a clear step up from the Ti's.

I had been planning on getting the Reyland setup, but I'm glad I waited for these; its a first class bit of kit.
Sc4mpi wrote:First time i stamped on the brakes the steering wheel tried to mate with my face. and the contents of my passenger seat became one with the glove box!
To be honest, if you’d like a demo either come to one of us, or visit someone you know with the kit from GB1 and try for yourself. :)

How long will it take? Could I collect? Damn it I want some sweet 4 pots already!
Provided we get the numbers and once everyone has paid (target 30th June) we will place the orders. Expect them around July time if all goes to plan.

Can I collect to save on postage?
Absolutely. I work in Rugby by day, live in Peterborough by night and Berger visits about once every 2 months. Rob lives in Peterborough too. Failing this, I'm sure we can kick-start the RT delivery network if you don't need them ASAP.

I’m a bit of a novice with cars, I don’t like working with brakes – can you help?
Sure. Talk to us about help fitting them. For Pie and chips and some cups of tea we’d travel great distances. In all honesty - they are as easy to fit as 282s but we’re more than happy to help.

What about spares in the future? Will I be able to get them?
Not a worry. Give us a call. :)

There is potentially a future modification to two-piece (bell and rotor) discs in the future (see below). This'll use off-the-shelf rotors, so disc supply will never be an issue.

Everything else is off-the-shelf; the pads are fitted to everything from Seat Leon Cupra R to Alfa-Romeo GTV6.

Can I just buy individual bits I want from the kit?
You may just buy discs if you have different calipers and wanted to do your own brackets. Put your name on the list with 'discs only' only next to it and still send the 10% deposit.

We will not sell the discs and the brackets for you to source your own bolts/fixings as we won't be able to sleep at night with the thought that someone somewhere has built the kit up with bolts made of China's finest cheese. The bolts supplied are pukka Grade 10.9 bolts.

Both of us have contributed to Rovertech for years and have paid-up through the Trader scheme to help it's maintainence - this kit and the Group Buy has been seen up-close by Admin on here and has their seal of approval. Most of you know both of us, however, if you'd like a character reference check our Feedbacks or ask an "old-hand"!

Anything else for the future?
Rob has designed aluminium bells to work with readily-available 325mm rotors for this kit. However, 325mm rotors are horrendously expensive (try £310 per pair, then you need 24 HT M6 bolts to attach to the bell!). As time goes by the cost will come down. He reckons a GB for two-piece rotors might be do-able in a year or so. His target is £300 for bells, rotors and bolts and it will work directly with this kit.

How long did it take to write this epic post?
Bout 15 mins as we’ve done GB1 already! :P Nonetheless I'm still going for a cuppa.

So, in summation:

£243 for the plain disc kit (plus £10 postage)
£279 for the grooved disc kit (plus £10 postage)
10% deposit up front, 90% payment to follow before 30th June

Now, put your name down and go find yourself some calipers if you haven’t done already!

Thanks

Simon and Rob

jaguar82 wrote:Sorry for offtopic, just would like to ask is it possible to get something like that for 620ti?
Sorry but neither of us have a 620Ti, we don't know anybody with one, and don't wish to get involved in a set-up for that vehicle. :)
Roger Red Hat wrote:sorry to be off topic again, but where you guys get the calipers from anyway? not many on ebay..

Peugeot do multiple Brembo setups. These particular calipers feature on the 3.0 V6 406 Coupe and 2.2 HDI Coupe. there is a Brembo setup on the 607, and another on the 807 too.

That's the 807 one kitted for a French 306.

To everyone - Please keep non-GB related chat to a minimum guys, it will be tricky enough to see the wood for the trees after a short while. If the questions are of a technical nature relating to the GB, please try to use Rob's original project thread. If you're not involved, or planning to be involved, please try not to use these threads.
samsexpress wrote:Si, is this the same kit i had of you after xmas?? if so i could do with just the discs :)
Sam, you have PM. :)

Guys, can i PLEASE draw your attention to the above. You MUST PM me the above details after adding your name to the list, in order for me to (via return PM) send you my bank details to pay the deposit. This gives me the necessary details to get hold of you for any issues. If you do not pay the 10% deposit, I will remove you from the list. I'm sorry, but that's the rules that are listed in the first post and it worked very well on GB1. :)

I would suggest that anyone with an interest in this thread bookmarks it and receives email updates. :)

Thanks

Negatory red squirrel, lug mounts are spaced differently - same goes for Alfa etc.

There'll be a set soon. There's a couple of set on ebay right now, plus you can get down your local breakers - 406 forums etc.

It completely depends on the wheel itself, but you would have been better testing or trying them out first. All the previous wheels fitted are listed in the thread with their ET's.

So i have bought them as i needed good brakes and quick.
