820 Tickford scrapyard rescue

Post by rovermadman4825 »

My brother has just rescued a 820 Tickford turbo from a scrapyard today. The car was far to good to break for spares 89K on the clocks with all the original fixtures and fittings with unmarked full black leather trim original r/c etc. I amasking to find out what size tyers were originaly fitted to the original alloys as thetyers have been removed from the aloys. It had to be boght as he got full car for £300. He now wants to know if any one would be interested in his maestro turbo build no 138 for around £1600 to fund the retoraition of this rare beast.

The wheels should be the 16" Roversport 5 spoke alloys as on mine and the tyres fitted to all Mk1 800's with 16" wheels were 205/55/16.

Glad to know another Ticky is to be saved. Being full leather interior I take it that the car is a saloon ? Concensus seems to be that the fastback never got the full leather as standard.

Well, as the busiest forum for 800 owners it is a useful resource. It's nice to see a Tickford being saved - they're not really my cup of tea (I prefer a NASP T series) but they're rare enough to need looking after (people like Rob Copson scrapping them don't help).

It's free, after all - we don't charge anyone anything to use it (unlike a certain .org forum we could mention!)

In fairness Richard, Rob had that car for sale for quite some time before he scrapped it. Also Rob has only scrapped one, there are plenty of folk who have scrapped one or more of them and you don't seem to be having snide digs at them every so often do you. Rob has kept enough cars, Rovers in particular from the scrappies over the years.

Apparently folks were asked to contribute to hosting charges etc, they weren't charged as you say though. Hardly free if members are encouraged to throw a few quid your way though is it.

I used to think you were a tremendously top chap Richard, you may well be in real life but you seem to leave common decency in the kitchen when you head into your front room to post on forums at times :| . Should you feel the need you can start having snide little digs at me online too :)

That is bang out of order. Rob couldnt save that car, The head was wrecked as were the valves and the pistons were knackered too.
So many people are very quick to jump in and chastise anyone who breaks a Tickford But not one person is willing to put there hand in there pocket to save one.
Unless of course they just want the pistons and rods.

Looks like it'll tidy up well - that back door will come out by 95% with a good panel beater and the front one should be fine too..

Hope it goes OK - if it does, you've got yourself a lovely motor.. Vit sport wheels look strangely good on a MK1 saloon - I had a set on my MK1 Sterling (which was an ex-Rover development car).

I'm not after a fight - but just to correct you on this one, a few members volunteered funds - no-one was asked to contribute. Full marks to any forum that allows free access - Rovertech, ARonline etc.

Full marks too, for rescuing a rare car, hope all goes well for the restoration.

Theseare my bro wheles off his old 800 vitesse that has been scraped. The original speedline whells are in the boot minus there tyers I do like the 17" but I think that he will be going back to standard wheels. The only welding that the car needs a pair of cills the welding is not a problem but are the cills still available.

Glad to hear it's going to be looked after! :)

Here's my old Nightfire Tickford saloon, still miss it, despite it being a complete pain in the bum to live with. Last thing I heard of it, it was being pampered in South Wales. :)

The back arches are starting to rust a litle on the N/S and it also needs a wing on that side too posibly a front door as wel as it has a rather large rust scab. I want to get it sorted out properly as it is a good car and it deserves to be done to a good standard.

Got the old girl running today it was alright at first but upon restart it refuse too so I wizzed the plugs out the plugs out the ones at either end of the engine were coverd in oil. So I warmed the plugs up and put them back in it started first time but it is now smokey oily smokey. It was then left to run up to tempeture and done a compresion test it 12 bar compresion across all four cylenders. So I think it neebs the head rebuilt as I hope it just needs valve stem seals done as the turbo is not puting any oil in the boost pipes. I am wanting to fit a Klinger head gasket to her but do they do a kit with the right valve stem seals in it for the M-serise? :?

never on my time on rover800.info have asked to give money (I am a regular forum member there as well) it costs him money to host it and some people have given him cash to help him keep the site running which I think is really good of them.

Rich is also a top chap in real life we even spent a long weekend camping together (not in the same tent I might stress) and he is a really nice guy, Im not looking for a fight at all either btw just felt I wanted to defend richard :)

It's not the best thought out engine in the world in places, and unless you're very lucky, having one as a daily driver is a bit mad.

Nothing serious ever happened, but every day had a new niggle, both with that one and my previous Tickford. Loved them both to death, but they do tend to drive amazingly one day, then lumpy the next, etc, etc.

MPG is also not one of the M16 turbo strong points. ;)

Not to mention that you had better invest in a Rottweiler to fend off all the T16 owners after the rods and pistons.

No probs Rich, I was responding to a comment that was totally out of order. In my book making comments about folks that no longer frequent the forum isn't on. It seems that folks were not asked to donate any cash over on the 800info forum for hosting charges. My apologies to Richard (Moss) for suggesting otherwise. Also apologies to the chap who started this thread :) , but in real life I wouldn't tolerate a friend being spoken about like that, same goes for forums. Online James is much the same as real life James (if anything I'm a bigger cnut in real life  )

Nice car the 820 Tickford Turbo - I like the numberplate as well - BRM is a sort of "Rover" connection :D

Good luck with the restoration.

I used to have a nightfire 820 Vitesse fastback on an L plate - loved it

Russ here , i bought the tickford from syzsounds . Im going to get some pictures up of the respray soon as I get access to a pc .
Is your brother planning on fitting a new pair of headlights ? Mine has a brandnew one on the near side , but it is from a LHD car . They are only available from rover and are about £100 each . Im looking at getting a second hand one to match the off side . Also fitting vitesse sport ARBs and maybe wooden surround clock and boost gauge . Direct replacement just thicker , a great mod for any car and cheap .
Let me know how the project is going .
