Because cars are about SO much more than just the numbers, the one car I would love above any other is a Gordon Keeble GT.rovermadman4825 wrote:whats your top trump car

If I get another car it's going to be a DB9 or perhaps a ZT260. There's plenty of classics I'd love as toys, though. A Delorean for one

Sort of a cross, between a DB4 and a Citroen DS. Wouldn't think it would work, but it does somehow.
@ Ant - with you on the 260 SE, but a DB9? *Snore*.

Re: My cars faster than yours , so ner
They will prise the keys to my rover from my cold dead hands.
I will always have a landrover, because no matter how good 4x4s get, they won't be a landrover, and you won't be able to do the things you can do with a landrover or the things I did.
Likewise I will always have a Rover, because no matter what you can buy it isn't a Rover. You can buy the most expensive gazillion horsepower car. But at the end of the day all you have done is gone out and bought an appliance, like a new dishwasher or the latest flatscreen TV. It isn't an achievement. It is just a car with no soul or love.
However taking a Rover, a car that is a classic underdog, and making it yours, well that is different. Injecting some soul, some character, each with their own little ways, or that piece that you have fixed/modified/changed to suit you.
I look at the Ti, I see I have made something they said couldn't be made, done what was not supposed to be done, it stands on its own merit and defines me - it is what it is, not a reflection of an aspiration.
It is very rare I would engage in the "whose chipolata is bigger" car games, as I really do think it is a sign of a serious insecurity or lack of satisfaction with life that causes people to have to constantly try and get one up all the time.
However, in such a moment of weakness, sailing past a supposedly fast car that somebody has bought, or paid somebody to build, in some old Rover I made in my shed with blood, tears and a hammer is the satisfaction of flopping out an all natural 12 inches - and a satisfaction that is all mine.
Saxo VTS? BMW M3? X5? Porsche? - I lol’d.

As Sheaf said, on paper they are close...to say that an X5 would leave a 220 in it's dust is silly.Martin wrote:Behave? In the past, I have built and ran a 230bhp Nitroused Honda B16 Rover Coupe, converted a Rover 400/MG ZS to T Series Turbo power and owned an MG ZR with T Series turbo power, I know the cars inside out and will re-iterate, the X5 4.6 iS will leave a stock 220 Turbo behind! Once you get to 100mph in the Coupe, the heat soak will hamper the 220's performance and the X5 will be pushing through 110mph, all the way to about 135 before acceleration starts to decrease! As for cornering and fast A road driving, the X5 iS holds the road like no other 4x4 I have driven!shen wrote:in the wet maybeMartin wrote:Cheers mateSheaf wrote:Great, so after all this we've established that your car is faster than a 90bhp french supermini.![]()
As for the beemers, I still maintain the best car I've ever driven is a E46 M3. Torque like a turbo'd car, revs like a VTEC, felt solid and very responsive.
And incidentally, just because you pull away from somebody, doesn't mean your car is faster than theirs. Some people just dont want to drive like a loon. I'm betting lots of people have thought that their cars are faster than an ATR, but tbh I just dont really want to encourage kids to crash their cars into lamposts. Their funeral costs will probably come out of my taxes and I just couldn't live with myself knowing that.
Lastly, who cares how fast a VTR is? Seriously. Fairly sure people used to play with VTRs in 214s years ago. It's like I've gone back in time.
Oh, and Martin, Welcome Back.... long time no postI also had an X5 4.6 iS Sport some time back, that was quick off the line and I certain would leave a stock 220 turbo, maybe even moderately tuned one, in its dust. Awesome.

2ton chelsea tractor...sure it may beat the 220 turbos on luxury and shiny newness but performance? please do behave
Ironically, I seem to be participating in an exchange of words quite in keeping with the subject of this thread
Also when mentioning higher speeds 100+ I am pretty certain that aerodynamics come into play...look at them and it's not hard to see which has the edge there.
I don't know how the X5 is on country roads...Doesn't look like it'd be too agile but I certainly don't like my coupe for little country roads either..far too floppy and slidy and the breaks aren't good enough to do the kind of speeds it can in such roads.
As for my top trump car...Think i'd really like a Jag XJ220..not the best hypercar but were it not for the recession of the day it would be held in such higher esteem.

On the X5 thing.... i have driven loads (obviously) the 4.8is areo kitted thing is great, and the V8 noise is fantastic, they may well be evenly matched to a coupe.... but the coupe sure as hell feels faster, and more fun, but the X5 is a luxurey cruiser.
Tbh, completely differet types of car, and there for imo you cant really compare them.

Maybe so, but they're shaped like a DB7. Or a DBS. Or actually anything Aston have done in the last ten years. MOVE THE F**K ON AND DESIGN SOMETHING ELSE, FOLKS!Punx0r wrote:srsly?Vard66 wrote:

Also, Marlborough is full of them. Standing out the front of the shop for an hour and a half would probably have meant you saw three Aston DB7s/9s/S's/etc etc. Those, Maseratis (particularly the Quattroporte), and F430s. After you see the first three or four in town you suddenly realise you're very bored of them.

No offence, but unless you actually went for a wee race and spanked him, its a bit of a rubbish story!

Re: My cars faster than yours , so ner
To be fair Martin has owned a variety of Rover turbos over the years, and has probably been one of the biggest exponents of the marque. So I don't doubt his judgement on the matter. So what if an X5 is a quicker car, there are plenty that are. Just relax safe in the knowledge that a Rover turbo will probably out perform it off roadshen wrote:As Sheaf said, on paper they are close...to say that an X5 would leave a 220 in it's dust is silly.Martin wrote:Behave?
