The 'RING 2010 Trip thread Tues 22nd - Sun 27th June

Me and Vard were chatting earlier about this years trip to the ring and as far as we are aware nothing is solidly planned yet, since we are in 2010 now seems like a good a time as any to start planning! Vard will shortly be in here but first off we need to make a rough plan of action and decide on what dates we want to do.

We think it would be best to head up early/mid week (early tuesday evening) do the trip there/most of the way there in one day and stay over night before tackling the ring the next day/or perhaps the next and then head back and do some light sight seeing on the return trip. (I think doing sight seeing on the way back is the best idea as people that dont want to can head straight home and it also allows extra time in case someone should break down!)

anyway ideas on dates and people who are interested get posting and we can get a list of atendees and an itineray (spelling??)

also if people who are interested please write whether they will be driving or are wanting to go but dont have transport etc

*Itinerary, and the other reason we decided to put any sightseeing at the end, was lest anyone should decide to spend more time at the 'Ring, rather than sightseeing.

Dates wise, we're thinking late May, as Jon, Baz and I discussed sometime last year, but that's as specific as we got.

I'm up for it regardless of whether I'm riding shotgun in Rich's Coupé (backup A), taking the GTi (highly unlikely backup B), or in the Vitesse herself!

Jon, Baz, and anyone else, who's game?

You also need to check the dates the ring is open too - we were going to look into organising something for 2010 - but it depends on interest and I have a pretty full plate atm, so seeing as Vard is supposed to be event coordinating - so this would be a help guys!

From memory, August/September is probably going to be your best bet.

its something ive always wanted to do but obviously depends on funds. Ill see if i can get saving but most of my pennies at the moment are going on the house (decorating) and the car (bodywork)

plus my passport ran out a few years back

im guessing its going to be around a £500 trip? possibly more...

I'll drag Stef into trawling through a 'Ring site or two, as he'll be better able to navigate them and find out what the dates are for this year.

Also, this thread can serve for suggestions of places and points of interest to visit on the way back!

I would say £500 as a top figure to allow, wouldn't be too far off. Allowing £300 will probably cover your fuel and food if you're fairly frugal with the go-pedal on the way across, and then there is ferry costs to consider, which last year was £60 return I think, per car. Otherwise it's simply what you used getting to anywhere else you see or anything else you do.

one of the guys that went last time will be able to help you better than I can but my brother spent almost dead on £500 but its easy to spend less, its one of those things that you can spend years sayign you want to do but never do so get on and do it!

well me and the other half would be going so we could split the cost really. wont be too bad at £250 a pop.

the later in the year it is the better for me as will give me longer to put money aside.

Your main expense is the fuel and the track ticket - accommodation if we get the place we did last time isn't bad at all (especially if you are up for sharing), food and (more importantly) beer is very good value (or was before Mr Brown F'd it all up).

If we can get some idea of who is interested then maybe Mr Vardon can go away and work some figures and see what deals we can get. I know the lap ticket gets cheaper if you buy in bulk.

If I recall correctly, last year the 'Ring Lap charge was 22Euros/lap. However, when bought in bulk of 25x, again if I recall correctly, the cost went down to 15Euros.

I'll have to get hold of Mr. Pinney and confirm that, as he was the man who bought the ticket last year.

Beer was good value indeed, because of their bottle return-refund system - the guys were buying something like 50 cases of cheap European Lager type stuff a night, but because of the returns from them returning all the recyclable bottles, it was only costing them 40% or something daft of the total cost otherwise to buy them!

I've still got fliers and price listings from the camp site we used in June, and I'll have a look into bulk hiring again, they were wonderfully accomodating for us last year, so I'm hopeful on that one.

Touristenfahrten basically means open to anyone, just not a lot of times put in there yet as these can vary considerably, i.e. it may say Touristenfahrten but that might only be for 2 hours all day etc.

I'd say it makes more sense to stay at the campsite for the duration as its actually geographically a pretty good location to go and see stuff from - slap bang between Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and the Rhine valley. Not far from the Luxembourg border either, Luxembourg having considerably cheaper fuel prices than, well, anywhere apart from Switzerland in a 1000 mile radius, and insaley cheap alcomohol and cigarette prices.

After August would be better, from a weather point of view if nothing else. I wouldn't feel too out of place in your derv, if I go I suspect it might be in the SDi.

I think you could go in any car on the ring. Even a Derv. It's the experience of being on it.

I would be interested with the toy if it lasts. But hoping to do the guild of motor endurance in May so I may not be able to make it then. And car might be knackered after a 6 hour race.

My brother went round in a 75hp 1.7 diesel astra works van and had a lot of fun! so noone will be telling you to go away:)

My mates older brother did this a year ago but didnt go over to France and through into Germany. He got on a ferry at Kent and it went round France and stoped closer to Germany or at Germany, but not to sure on location.

Worked out very cheap he said.

us lot from the rover coupe owners club will proberbly be going again this year.

it will be the same camp site.

and dates all depend on public days etc . so will be decided around that .

cost wise:

ferry ticket from dover- dunkkirk £30-£50 pound return . depending etc
fuel - depending on where you are in the country etc your looking at a tank to get you to the ring and a tank to get you back.

id allow 3.5 tanks of petrol. so allow 150 pound for that

cost of insruance and break down recovery THIS IS A MUST ( vard will agree )

ring insurance ! again must really .around 50 pound for 2 days it think

we stayed on a camp site with hot showers etc and a little restaurant

camping was about 7 euros a night per person.

track ticket. costwise no idea it goes up every year.allow 20 euros a lap

this is for a tent pitch etc ( please bring a proper tent !! ) not some tesco argos cheapo . otherwise you will regret it.

food every one usally pitchs in 10 euros a night for beer and food for breakfast and dinner .

so overall cost depending on how long we go for will be around 400 pound PER CAR
if you take a passenger you half the ferry cost and fuel straight away. also depends on number of laps you do.

this does not take into the equation the ware on your car . or the cost it will take you to get your car ready for trip. ie new tyres and brakes. good service and valet and the cost of things luxury's you want to take. or the cost of your insurance or break down etc

i warn you now. that i went with work and went through a set of not cheap toyo t1-r's in just 8 laps.

also we where all pulled by the German police the year before last. and you must has all your documents on you at all time. so you cannot afford not to have cover!

we will be planning this mid feb no doupt and it would be good to tye in the two meets as we meet our dutch counter parts
