Re: Trackcar - £500 to spend - your choice??
If I were you, I would buy a Rover 220 tomcat.
I have 1 its an N/A model still shifts tho plenty of power in it bout it for £500.
If your not in any rush take a good look round and see whats out there.
I set myself a £500 limit for the reason being if i have an off and the car aint repairable then its only £500 and i could probably split what was left of the car for near enough £500.

I would say a 216GTi, for the same reasons above but the shell is supposedly better (debatable i think) and its 100kilos lighter

Golf GTi mk2. Felt so responsive and torquey strong chassis to. I know some examples can be expensive but i got mine for FREE :) strip it out and a few mods here and there sorted.

I'd say 216GTi twincam too. Only thing there is they are getting a bit on the rare side.
vvc Metros with torsen diffs work very well on track I can tell you that.

Yep, hatch is much stiffer. Shells are comparable weight, but Coupe has lighter doors and no monster rear hatch!MarkCoupe wrote:I would say a 216GTi, for the same reasons above but the shell is supposedly better (debatable i think) and its 100kilos lighter

I dont understand why the hatch is stronger? because isnt there much more structure around the coupe and just glass around the hatch..

The coupe has removable roof panels which mean there isn't very much roof structureRoverdose214 wrote:I dont understand why the hatch is stronger? because isnt there much more structure around the coupe and just glass around the hatch..

So im guessing the cabby would be the worst out of the 3? Plus dont all hatches have sun roofs.
Re: Trackcar - £500 to spend - your choice??
Mk1 Saxo VTS. 130bhp standard at 965kg, cheap to buy and cheap to modify. You can clag on a Saab T17 without standalone management by just putting a 5th injector in front of the inlet. Ive seen rough versions go for £200. Add a turbo for another £250 and your looking at about 160/170 break. Strip the interior, seats, sparewheel, as much as possible and shave it right down. Youve got a sub 14 second car.
I wouldnt take a metro near a track, ive got more stable jellies in the fridge.

I know Saxos get alot of criticism for being the #1 Chavtastic car but they are quick and nimble but the back end is suicide even if you lower it!

You say that like lowering a car makes it handle better!
Speaking of decking a car, we just had some young chap come in in his ebay coilover'd civic, it was literally on the floor, had it for MOT and noticed that the upper wishbone mounts on the inner wing, were slowly peeling off (the weld was slowly tearing of the wing).

Re: Trackcar - £500 to spend - your choice??
Could build a pretty good metro for £500 but "off the shelf" like,i think a E30 Bmw 325i,or 220 gsi/gti.

220 is same power (give or tak a couple of hp) as a 216GTi twin cam, but 100kilos heavier.
Deffo agree about 325i though, great car, but getting more and more expensivo :(

I'd look at this: http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/kitcar/ ... hp?id=1098
The quantum kit car is supposed to be really and it used xr2 parts so tuning/handling upgrades should be cheap... and it's light :D

Rover 200 BRM would be fun. Strip it and sell all the parts to fund a rollcage, suspension tweaks etc.

A vvc coupe, Infact my vvc coupe, paid £400 for it and spent another £100 on a 52mm throttle body and carbon airbox.

Re: Trackcar - £500 to spend - your choice??
proper dead thread revival, but I've been thinking has anyone built a coupe vvc with ITB's, serious cams, hi comp enlarged pistons, stroked crank, bigger liners, properly ported head from DVA or alike, etc etc, just thought with the nasp response and the right setup could see 250-260hp and a serious competition car, really light front end and a proper rear end suspension set up + longer wheel base. Obviously the chasis would have to be RS spec+. Completely off topic but so's reviving a 9 year old thread lol

A Renault Clio has potential on the track id say. Perhaps a 172 ? The scrappy have one with the rollcage, bucket seats etc all still in.

Why would anyone want to!
Would cost small fortune to have less power than mildly modified turbo

106 GTi? Meant to be a good track car though never driven one. Personally wouldn't touch a french car though. I'd probably look for a Metro with a 160 VVC engine
