Movies based on Video games

Post by rovex »

Are they ALL rubbish? Ive been trying to think of a good one, but i really cant. Saw Prince of Persia this weekend. It was just boring. Not bad as such, but nothing memorable. Its also failed at the box office taking $30M this weekend in the US, on course for $100M total if its lucky. It cost $200M to make..

I looked forward to Max Payne... I fell asleep watching it.

Not strictly based on a video game but Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was good imo.

I thought Doom was very good, way better than the game.
And I thought silent hill was ok to.

Halo movie - on hold
Gears of War movie - on hold

Games movies dont seem to "in" at the minute.

resi evil was pretty cool

would of been SOOOO!! much better if they used to orginals story line..but no!! they had to go and change it all, only show the mansion once..

why bother making a film on a game if your not going to stick to what the happend in the game!

hmm, rant over.

but i still liked it.

ah yes, I was trying to think of that. I thought the first one was very good. The sequals were utter poo tho.

i always thought half life would make a great film. The plot even from the players point of view was movie quality. Infact both were.

Wouldn't you say that any generic zombie game came after Dawn of the Dead? So wasn't 28 Days Later (best ever British film BTWIMO) based on Dawn of the Dead instead?

I dont think movies based on an idea count i mean branded movies. The title has to match the game. I cant see any good movies suggested yet. There are one or two that dont suck, but no actual good ones.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

visually stunning film. Bit of an over complex plot though.

And the anime version of street fighter is quality lol.

My understanding of Final fantasy is that it wasnt based on the game, it was originally just called 'The spirits Within', but they added the Final fantasy bit to boost interest. I havent played FF for decades but from what i remember the movie was totally unrelated. The Movie was linked to 'Square', but it wasnt really a film based on the game.

I just think the use of a games name for a movie is box office poison. Tomb Raider was the only remotely successful one, and lets face it, Jolie looking like she did was going to help the movie take some money regardless of what it was called.

i've never played any of the FF games so couldnt comment.

But I do remember wondering how some sort of military space film thingy was related to a game that normally has fantasy types holding swords in its adverts.

FF advent children was loosely based around final fantasy VII. same characters etc but different story. based after the game i believe.

FF spirit within as far as i know was not based on any of the games.
