I've just been given a 3 previous owner, J reg 820 turbo. I had a quick look under the bonnet and it's different to the T16, it has different rocker covers and manifolds.
Is it an M series? If so, would any parts be interchangable with my coupes T16? I've heard the rods and pistons can take a bit more than the 12psi the T16 ones can take?
I will post some pics when I get home

Please don't break another one just to get a few more horsies out of a common coupe.
Yes, M series pistons can work damn well in a T16, think the most I've seen from a car with that combination is about 330bhp. Forgies are far, far better though - leave the M16 in the car where it belongs, there are literally only a handful left now - when I got the figures two years ago from the SMMT there were less than 30 (bizarrely equally split - 15 saloon and 15 fastback) which hadn't been declared scrapped, so I'd guess less than that are actually in a state of semi repair!
Blowby can be a big issue with M series pistons in a T, as can having to sleep with one eye open due to wondering if any of the Tickford Massif is going to break in and cook your dog.
I really want another one as some point, so please leave some left on the road for me. Ta.

Because there is a small following of what is an extremely rare car
Yes, if you break it you WILL die !!
piggy22 wrote:Any idea of what would be required then?
May be a better/cheaper idea to restore it then flog it seen as though I got it for the cost of a trailer home
What's wrong with it ?

Depends on what you call costly ? The major problem with 800s of any type is the handbrake and perhaps a balljoint or two. Then the sills might need looking at but apart from that, they're pretty strong cars (when looked after and not abused).
Funny you say that: the handbrake is shagged. The back arches are a tad rusty, but it's been garaged for the last 4-5 years so not as bad as it would of been. Interiors a bit mouldy, back seats look like they have never been sat in.

I like you!
How rare are they?
Well, as I mentioned above, I contacted the SMMT to get the numbers a couple of years ago, and there were 15 saloons and 15 fastbacks left out of the original 500ish, not all of which were taxed or had an MOT.
I know personally of several that have been scrapped since then, more than likely a few on top of that, so I'd guess about ten left of each maximum now.
A rare bugger indeed - but sadly still worth stuff all financially at the moment! Mind you, prices do seem to be on the rise slowly.

The problem with the handbrake is most likely the caliper carriers where the guide pins have siezed and possibly the calipers themselves are stiff through lack of use.
Simple fix, a pair of carriers and a good dousing of WD40 on the calipers (especially the return springs which get covered in crud) and you'll most likely solve the problem.
Sills can be bought for £20 per side and the Mk1 and Mk2 are the same so supply shouldn't be a problem.
iv had real trouble getting sills... was only able to get the LH side, tryed lots of places
Good luck with restoring it have a look at my tickford thread, mine is getting there slowly

I've had a quick look at your restoration thread and it looks like a lot of work. I'm no experianced mechanic, but changing calipers and rebuilding heads are among things I can/have done. I wouldn't know where to start with regards the sills and arches though.
I'm sure that after I've washed it to get the dust off and give it a good clean I will be able to see more clearly what will be needed and get the work done by someone (maybe even an rt member) if I can't do it myself.
How would I got about starting it, bearing in mind it's been stood for about 5 years. Fuel filter, oil change maybe?
The batterys dead but I shall bump start it off my coupe no problems as the battery in that is a beauty

Get some pics up !
Any idea why it was laid up for so long ?
Check the oil and filters, Crank the engine with no king lead attached to get the oil pressure up first.
Make sure there's fresh fuel in there and good luck !!
If you need any help there's a few of us on here with Tickford experience, Well, I know which bits to save when they get broke ..

I've been away and haven't had access to a computer, I've been using my iPhone for posts on here. I will be back to put pictures up later at about tea time.
I don't suppose anyone knows any cheap ways of recovering it to my house? It's in Stockport so needs bringing up to Leeds on a truck.

Stockport you say ?
Not far from me at all.
Are you a member of green flag ? If so, wash the car so it looks like it's being used and push it down the street, give them a call and ask them to recover it "home".
