'Yids'?
It is maybe a wee bit derogatory.

Re: englands world cup chances
As you know it's derived from Yiddish which literally translates as Jewish. It is a known fact that the area of London where Tottenham is based (and Arsenal for that matter) has a high demographic of Jewish people. Sure if they were called something to do with the holocaust then yes it would be derogatory but when your own fans chant 'Yid Army' how can it be bad?

No, as already mentioned the Tottenham fans sing it themselves.noonan mckane wrote:'Yids'?

Mind you, the Celtic fans were up in arms about a sodding pretend flute from the legend that is Paul 'Hello Moaty, I have brought a fishing rod!' Gascoigne. What's the problem? Is he not allowed an instrument?

Re: englands world cup chances
Yiddish: "The word is simply the English form of German judisch, "Jewish", short for judisch-deutsch, "Jewish-German".
Note that the Yiddisher is not any Jew, but a Jew that Speaks Yiddish. And Yid is an offensive shortening of Yiddisher."

Ah, but, no but. Them who's not 'yids' should really try to refrain from saying it, d'ye not think?
If only to stay out of the whole hornet's nest that's in there.
I recall Gazza's flute. We (at Celtic) have never been as big on the sectarianism & that whole medieval thing they do at Glasgow Rangers as people might presume.
We busied ourselves with winning the European Cup, rather than the battle of The Boyne.
Chelsea, Arsenal, the Spurs, bless them, never have brought the European Cup to London. Will it ever be won by a London club? You'd think they would've by now.....

No, I don't if it isn't meant with any malice. Words either get banished for everyone for racism or they are OK for everyone if meant in a joke manner as the 'Yid Army' chant is.noonan mckane wrote:Ah, but, no but. Them who's not 'yids' should really try to refrain from saying it, d'ye not think?

Yeah, but your team have to sponge strikers off a second rate London team to try and fail to catch up the supreme beings of Scottish Football - Glasgow Rangers.

I am quite serious on that one. Comments edited, don't want to see anymore thank you very muchRacial / xenophobic / religious bigotry
These will not be tolerated at all. The world we live in today is constantly changing and we have to accept that some comments can no longer be viewed as light hearted and can appear truly offensive.
Offensive comments will be edited by the admin or mods and if necessary the originator's account will be immediately suspended and a warning issued pending further administrative action.

Null_Byte, the thing is there is a difference between genuine racism and a joke. I am a Yank, I play on that about invading countries, stealing oil and being thick.Null_Byte wrote:I am quite serious on that one. The whole 'Yid Army' thing is a classic example.
Football is the most emotive subject you can ever come across in my opinion. I remember being at USC years back, freezing myself to death, finding everything I could to burn on the fire, my Mrs at the time offered me her City coat but I would rather catch pneumonia than wear a City coat for a second.

Re: englands world cup chances
Racism is not a joke to those involved.
Regardless of what you may find funny (and we try and keep an open mind) the forum rules are there for a very good reason.
You can call me a football idiot and all rovers rubbish, but that is below the bar.
As I have said before I'm pretty laid back as long as people keep to the rules. Otherwise the big stick has to come out.

Null_Byte, please drop me a PM if you feel something was untoward, otherwise how am I to know what you deem unacceptable? I certainly posted NOTHING that was racist. Hell, I used to go out with a girl that would be classed as 'half-cast' by many people.Null_Byte wrote:Racism is not a joke to those involved.

'Half-cast' is considered as offensive/racist these days (and for a long time tbh). Like calling an african-american 'coloured'.

Re: englands world cup chances
There is nothing to discuss.
I see racist terms. I edit them. Job done.
If I thought they were intended with malice accounts would have been banned. The topic is not open for debate. Rules are rules and they will be respected.

Re: englands world cup chances
Yes. You'd have been safer going with 'tw@t', or 'fucknut', as these are not specific by race type or gender.
'wankblanket' can work, too.
It's 'wankblanket' we're pretty much using over here, watching this one.

Re: englands world cup chances
What rot. Celtic don't have to 'try and fail' to catch Rangers. When Rangers win The European Cup (or even reach the final, like Celtic have, twice), they'll have 'caught' us.Limecat wrote:No, I don't if it isn't meant with any malice. Nottingham Forest are a 'bigger' club than Rangers. So are Feyenoord and Stauea Bucharest.
And only folk who really love them or really hate them call them "Glasgow" Rangers. Their name is Rangers FC. Celtic are The Celtic Football And Athletic Company, not 'Glasgow Celtic'.
Ajax (4 time winners of The European Cup) are actually called 'Amsterdam Football Club'.
I'm rambling now...
