They all make massive profits. very true...im a shareholder with BP so i don't have a problem with that. But the big money's in trading oil(which has an infinite amount of uses other than petrol)/fuels on the global and commercial markets. Forecourts sales are not a money spinner. Another reason why taking the suggested action is pointless.

A lot of these companies reported high profits, but mostly from 'other' methods
and not petroleum. I think the Tax needs to be hit more so than the companies that supply it. You only had to use that Fuel tax calculator that was
recently posted just to see where all the money goes..

I reckon we should just all get our cars, drive to Westminster and blockade the Houses of Parliament just before the start of summer recess. If the MPs can't get out of the building to go on their hols then it may strike the message home - or get us all locked up......... :?

I'm gonna join in - at the end of the day I think it's worth a try. :)

I don't think it's a silly idea at all - what annoys me is people who moan about things but don't join in when something is done to attempt to change it. :x

Even if it doesn't work - what inconvenience is it to the consumer to try this anyway ? :?

You're correct, it's not silly. Even if such a protest was misdirected the point would
still be brought to the attention of the media, and therefor just about everyone else
including the goverment. Even when we had all that allmighty grief after
the refinery's were blockaded
the point certainly got stamped firmly home and the goverment eased off
with the usual increase in excise on petrol.
So it is worth doing !

Nothing ventured, nothing gained :D
If something is not done soon, where will it all end? £1 a litre, £2??? Why should we pay more than nearly every other country in the world??

Surely its the government we need to hit, at 70%+ tax on fuel, that's why we pay so much.

Petrol prices in Ireland have now risen by around 10 cents over the last week or so to 1 euro or more per litre. About a year ago or so, it was around 80 to 85 cents a litre.

Even at about a euro per litre, that's still cheaper than in the UK, but then we pay a lot more road tax than you guys. You might expect that we might have good roads though, but that's not the case. Only some of our potholes have bits of road around them. Our national roads authority actually wants to toll existing roads that were built with tax payers' money!

Did you hear about the Paddy Irish man who had to pay a toll on a road that was already paid for by his taxes?
That's it - no punchline.

exactly why i described the action as silly.

The article is full of misinformation and misdirection. It's annoying to see articles like this that embellishes the truth and fool joe public.

The cost of petrol is made high by the amount of duty levied on it. Deduct the theasury's share and petrol would actually only be about 20p a litre. :!:

I got a pretty much identical message last year in an email. Didn't work then..
AT the end of the day the petrol companies actually make more profit from the stuff they sell with the petrol than from the actual petrol (that's what I heard somewhere anyway), so there's no point targetting them.
Also I dont think enough drivers would do this to make it worthwhile.. most people are just going to fill up wherever is the cheapest and most conveniant at the time.

However in theory it may well work.

The petrol companies do not care...
The government needs to be hit...
70% tax...
Council Tax...
Petrol Tax...
Road Tax...
Insurance Purchase Tax...
Income Tax...
Congestion Charge...
Value Added Tax..
NOW
Toll Roads are just round the corner...
Not to mention all the other stealth taxes we don't all know about...
If they reduce the tax on petrol they will just put it on something else...
Think I will have to move abroad...

The Government also gain a lot of revenue in taxation of the oil when its first mined out of the North sea, etc. As already said, the price of oil per barrel fluctuates considerably, buying and selling barrels of oil is big business!

I don't know who supplies Safeway or Tesco, but I know BP supply Sainsburys, or at least they do around here.

Here's the best one...
Pay tax on your earnings...
Save your taxed earnings and get paid interest on the said taxed earnings and get taxed on the interest...

On a broadly similar theme (didn't get the badgers bit...perhaps I'm thick) was reading a discarded copy of the Times on the train on Monday and saw this:

why does it read a good idea?

It's alarming to think. If the public take so easily to such ill-information at face value then its no wonder that we get taken for mugs for petrol.

I understand the saying 'nothing ventured nothing gained' but this seems like people are genuinely arrogant to the problem and are now clutching at straws.

may be of interest to know how little the price of fuel actually is.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/wor ... 933648.stm

about 21p/litre for petrol. not bad, but that leaves 60p/litre going to the government!

i dont think the garages are to blame for the stupidly high price of fuel in the UK.

Drew
ps. go get yourselves an '04 R1. 0-60 in 3ish seconds, low 10sec 1/4. 48mpg last week ;)

Hey I've noticed that this is getting a little touchy I think.

Either support it or don't, but don't comment on others opinions please as everyone is entitled to their own.
