My mate know's he's in the wrong and knows it should of been sorned, just one of them things he forgot to do while sorting ou his new motor.

He didn't know about now having to sorn for no insurance to though. I think his bigest gripe is the fact they can now come and clamp your car on private property even though its not parked on a public highway. He'd of been happy with just the £60 fine. But the fact he now has to pay to re-insure his old car just to tax it to get the clamp off is a bit of a joke.

I didn't think continuous insurance was in force yet? I've seen nothing in the news, and there wasn't a launch date when we were discussing it a couple of weeks ago.

I've got the SD1 on SORN and I was expecting to get a letter from the DVLA if I needed to do anything about it :?

Have you got a reference for this? If it's true it must be very recent, and I can't think of any justification for it.

That's the thing If the vehicle is sorned you don't have to have it insured. It's only if it's not sorned or road taxed it needs insurance. So your safe with the SD1. :)

I see the regional TV news every evening and listen to the radio all day, yet it hasn't been mentioned at all!

If an old SORN is the same as a new SORN then I guess I'm all right.

Sorry to your friend but this has been advertised all over the radio for months..

:sorry:
I knew nothing about it until someone mentioned it on here. Imagine what it's going to be like for non car minded people! Very shady, very shady indeed!

Anyway just take the wheels off and put it on axle stands, can't clamp it then. :)

This is the closest thing I could find to a reference on private land clamping with a quick search:

http://www.the-ace.org.uk/unlicenced-ve ... -land.html

So it does seem the law has been amended to allow it, but only on land "that is not 'Intrinsically part of a private dwelling'"

So it seems it's safe on your driveway.

Completely forgot about renewing the daddy wagon's car tax this month. Letter from DVLA arrived the other morning, and I immediately remembered what it would be about. Pleasantly surprised when I opened it that it wasn't the £80 fine for not taxing, but a last chance reminder !! Needless to say first thing I did was get down the PO and renew.

So it seems double standards that DVLA send reminders to some, but pitch up and clamp others. I suppose these last chance reminders go to those whose car shows as being insured (poss cross-checked with MOT register ??), but straight in with the clampers if you're not showing as insured.

I'm guessing this will probably go the same way as when they changed the car tax renewal time limits a few years ago. For a while they were hitting you with the fine if you hadn't taxed/SORNed by midnight on the last day of the month, now it seems you get a grace period, so hopefully in a little while they'll operate this with a grace period/reminders, but go draconian at the start to show they mean business.

Whats the score with cat c vehicles then, ive got two cars on my drive which i,m going to be breaking for spares shortly.I never got the logbook with either of them and i cant sorn them because they have to be in the registered owners name to do so.
The only way to get a logbook is to have them vic checked and apply for a logbook, but being accident damaged they will never be put on the road again anyway.
Either of them are not insured at the moment because i brought them from a salvage site with the intention of using them for parts only.
So as they stand as far as i no they are not sorned or insured, how do i go about doing the right thing, theres no chance of me repairing them just to get them vic checked and getting a logbook just to scrap them anyway..

If they came from a scrappy aren't they already declared as scrapped?

If they're not registered to you then the DVLA won't know you've got them anyway!

If they're on your driveway or garden then it sounds like they shouldn't be touching them. But if you remove the number plates and cover the VIN in the windscreen (as suggested above) then I doubt they'll be able to do anything even if they wanted to.

I'd cut the clamp off and get rid of the car asap - even if he has to use one of those car buying companies.

Dispose of the clamp and theres no evidence of criminal damage (they can't prove something is damaged if they cant see it). It would never get past the CPS to a persecution.
