To Sell or Not to Sell !

Post by matthews2k »

Hi Everybody.
I'm toying with the idea of selling the Maestro  Just though i would throw it out there.
See if there is any interest and how much you all think she is worth :D
Running two cars is getting increasingly expensive Maestro and MG zr and me and the girlfiend are trying for a baby

As for the car what can i say MG Maestro turbo 435. Black 68.000 miles. You all know the car. If i listed everything i would be here all day.
I've spent thousands on her she has wanted for nothing. Insurance have but an agreed value of £3500. She's not perfect i have to admit. But she is a fine example. My close friend Colin Francis has been working on her and even he was impressed. He use to race a 300bhp MG Maestro turbo in the Toyo Fast Road Saloon Championship back in the 90's. He now has his own garage in Great Harwood.

To be honest it pains me to even think of sell this car she is magical i find myself taking her for a quick run and getting back 3 hours later. I just cant get out of her. but i would like her to go to a good home. If i decide to sell. Thanks For your comments :)

Hi Rob.
Have posted lots of pics on a earlier post but will stick some more on asap
she hasent changed much only go's out about once a week.

As for the spec i can on only tell you rougly markcoupe built her so might know more.

Standard O series engine. Bigger turbo but running standard boost. Cold air feed with battery to boot conversion.
Gearbox off a 620 ti with LCD. Power Flow exhaust. Uprated brakes off a TF 160. Im sure there is more. :D

When i got her she had been stored in a garage for three years. and in a sorry state
Quick run down but will have to get the file out. oil change every 6 months. timing belt. Plugs, leads, Rotor arm, Coil. Plugs heliocoled and welded alternater bracket. Welding in the boot. New radiator. New thermostat housing, Carb has been totally rebuilt. New wheel cylinders. Rewire on the headlamps. New rev couter. Turbo timer, New dump valve. and loads more. She drives like a dream :D

Bad points. Drivers door needs attension thats the worse bit :( . NSR wheel bearing has play which i will fix :D
I noticed the other day that both outer cv boots look abit worn and need replacing which i will fix. CV Joints Fine. no Knocking. Passenger door has dropped but colin said will look at. and little tiny paint work stuff nothing major.

I had the red 220gsi which i modeled on yours :) . But the Maestro is a differnet kettle of fish theres always something.

Remember guys, this thread isn't in the right part of the forum for people to make offers. This is just where Mike is asking for opinions on whether he should sell it or not. This is your choice to persuade him to keep it ;)

Mike, if you want classified access (For Sale/Wanted/What's It Worth), drop me a PM and I'll verify your account.

If i didn't have my coupe now, then id have been very interested in this car too! I still have pics of it on my desktop when it was Mark's car. it looked so damn agressive and purposeful with the TF wheels and brakes and seriously lowered too.

What makes me want it even more is what Mark said about it and it's performance too, Im sure he said it was the only thing that rivals the rolling acceleration of a tuned Toyota MR2 turbo, and that is coming from someone who has owned some seriously quick and brilliant cars!

I'm not gonna sell the coupe now, as they don't seem to be worth anything compared with prices 3years ago, but IMO a mint Tickford Maestro, is as cool a car as a really nice Lancia Delta Integrale is, and i've always loved both cars!

From the sounds of it you don't want to sell! With a car like this its got to be some thing your 100 percent sure on. Cus if your not, you'll regret it when it goes! I've thought about selling my GSi a few times, but never been sure so have never gone through with it! I must admit though, I've always said that one of the few cars I'd swap or sell my GSi for is a decent Maestro Turbo...............

To tell you roughly what it is worth then the following is needed:

Close up pictures of inside all four doors on the sills where the seams are and also by the b pillar.
Inside and outside of the bottom of all four doors.
Pictures of both rear arches including the part when the rear arch meets the sill.
Photo of hatch and inside the bottom of the hatch.
Photographs of the seam on the a-pillars.

I assuming welding in the boot was to the rear back panel?

Thanks RobBBoi your so correct i really really do not want to sell, i've wanted a Maestro Turbo since i was 16. I really don't think i would find another one like this especially with the history, mileage and colour. But if me and the girlfreind do end up haveing a baby i dont think i will have any choice. Think she is getting wise to me saying not tonight ive got a headache

Thanks to everybody else for the comments. I can see there is interest and she would go to a good home. :D

Out of interest how much does it cost you to insure? I look at mine sometimes and think that it costs less than 600 quid a year to insure, MOT and tax, so it can sit in the garage and look pretty for that, rather than sell it when I don't want to or let it go to a n00b who'll destroy it! Admittedlley, I don't have sprogs just yet, so maybe my view will change when that time comes!

I have a 3 month old daughter who has been to car shows in the past two weeks in the Maestro Turbo and the 220 GTi Turbo. I just don't see why babies make people sell cars, unless of course it is two-door sports car.

I'm not sure its the type of car that's the problem. More the fact there's a decent amount of money tied up in it. Money that arguably could be better spent when children are involved.

Hi
The Maestro costs nothing to insure. Think i'm paying about £40 a month thats on classic car insurance.
Limited to 4000 mls a year. Can't believe your gsi is that cheap i still have your car as my wallpaper on my computer :o

I'm 32 with a clean license. My MG ZR 105+ is double that payment. :annoy:
The cost is not a problem. She was in the garage for three months once with an Intermitant misfire. We replace everything on the HT side. Then i thought it was the fueling side,
Then i though sticking valves. In the end it turned out to be the rev counter it was stealing the live from the coil :? But she was still insured and taxed. I do sorn her off the road through winter though but carrying on paying the insurance.

Like you say RobBBoi it what the car is worth. I payed £2000 for her but she was in a right state.
I know it sound greedy but i sold three cars to get her because i thought she was an investment
Even if i shuved her in a garage and did no work.
Didn't think i would end up falling in love  Girlfiend not happy !

It's an awesome car dude!
Assuming thats it's pretty well rust free in all the usual Maestro rust spots, and i didn't have a nice clean coupe now, then as i said id love to buy this off you! I've wanted a Tickford 505 on and off since 2005! The only other car's i've been very close to buying was a GTO, a 220Gtit and a Skyline GTS.

I'll keep my coupe i think now, as it only needs bits and peices painting, bodywork polishing and a few minor dents removed and repaired. It's a rust free coupe bodywork wise, and how many of these do you see now? A rust free MG Maestro turbo would be even more of a gem of a car though!

I'm suprised that Mark doesn't want it back, as he must of put loads of time and money into it to make it as cool and awesome as it was then and still looks now!

Tbh it sounds like you don't want to sell. If you did I think you'll regret it. Just keep hold of it for as long as possible, wait until you absolutely have to sell it. Then put me at the top of the list ;)

Anyone who can explain car insurance could become a rich man!
I've had cheapish quotes Circa £230FC for my 94 Rover coupe (for a std car), but i pay nearly £260FC to insure a 950cc 2001 Suzuki alto which is my daily driver. I've had quotes for my coupe with loads of mods declared for under £400, and yet recently at renewal time there were only 2companies that quoted me under £300 for the Suzuki, and many were in the £400-550 bracket?

I've also found that performance and modifed car specialist insurers are some of the least competative when it comes to getting quotes for an ordinary low Ins group everyday car.

Keep it.

It's an awful time to try and sell a car let alone a performance car. You obviously want to keep it, so hold onto it a little longer.

I don't get it either. Unless it's an Aerial Atom most cars can accomadate a baby and the necessities. More often than not couples will have more than one car anyway so don't see the need for two mini buses to carry one sprog  .
