RIP John Peel

The legend that is John Peel sadly passed away today.

I'm sure I speak for many when I say that I will miss his radio shows. When I was in my teens in finding my feet with music, I used to listen to his Radio 1 show and it would inspire me to try listening to new and different (and sometimes very odd) genres of music.

He was a very friendly character, and the fact that he did his shows from his home, Peel Acres, reinforced that. He'd always have a cheery and positive attitude about everything, even when he'd play a record at the wrong speed and it'd still sound bad once corrected! Also, I just liked the sound of his voice.

Life goes on and I'm glad I still have some old John Peel shows on tape. I hope Radio 1 will replay some of them at some point, I'll definatly be listening.

was shocked when I heard the news, always seemed very genuine and "real" to his profesion. A friendly voice, who helped a lot of todays bands get where they are today.

He will be missed.

I spent the best part of the early 90s listening to excellent sessions. He awkened me to some of the greatest music of all time. A Legend and a throughly decent bloke.

I have to say I was not a modern-day Peel fan, but his sessions in the 90s were awesome.
I was very shocked to hear the news. John Peel is a part of the furniture at Radio 1 and will be sadly missed.

They are doing a tribute all day, playing a mixture of "his" type of music and the rest of the usual...

It's a sad day for the music industry.

I was absolutely gutted upon hearing it broadcast on Radio1 today - the man was a legend and will never be forgotten

And they've played probably the best music ever recorded on Radio1 today in his memory, I certainly won't forget it for a long long time.

I've not had the radio on this evening until now. They're dedicating song after song to him, it's quite amazing.

Anyone who hasn't heard any of his shows or doesn't know much/anything about him, I suggest you put Radio 1 on this evening.

I dont remember ANY other personality's death having such a profound effect on me
I too was listening ot the likes of the Souxsie/Selecter/Jam/999/Fall/Undertones and particularly Elvis Costello - and its just amazing that he had the same sense of enthusiasm for Indie as he did for punk. He was a 65 yr old man into D&B FFS

Jarvis Cocker summed it up for me tonight on the tribute board

It would be absolutely impossible to write a history of the last 40 years of the British music scene without mentioning John Peel's name. He was one of those few people about whom you could truly say that the world would have been a much different place without him.

For many years he almost single-handedly championed new & challenging music in the U.K. Through his radio sessions he allowed unknown & unsigned bands to be heard for the first time. Through his work with the BBC World Service he brought some of those same bands to a Worldwide audience. On the few occasions I was fortunate enough to meet him I found him to be a witty but quite shy man who was completely unimpressed by the "razzmatazz" of the music industry but who could instantly lay his hands on any obscure single you could mention hearing on his show whilst in your teens.

My teens were when Peel was most important to me I guess: the local radio stations wouldn't play any "Punk Rock" cos they thought it "wasn't music". One night in frustration I started tuning the dial & suddenly - Bang! - there it was; I caught the end of an Elvis Costello track, heard the dry, slightly droney voice that followed & I was hooked. A whole new world opened up - stuff that you would never get to hear anywhere else. & it was fun! It wasn't dry & academic - the monologues that invariably followed each song were often as entertaining as the tracks themselves (sometimes more so).

In a world that is becoming ever more homogenised & pre-programmed John Peel stuck up for the "sore thumbs" of the music scene & I really can't think of anyone who could have done it better or who's going to do it now he's gone. I will miss him greatly & my utmost sympathy goes out to his friends & family.

Without John i'd have never of discovered Sonic youth, Mudhoney, Black flag, Jamie Wednesday(Carter USM) The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard, Billy Brag, Velvet Underground, Max Romero, the wedding present, The Pixes, Jesus & Mary Chain etc etc... the list is endless and thats just me!!! Forgot to mention some of the fantastic Ivor Cutler Tracks

The John Peel Session that the pumpkins played were amazing, I must have spent close to Â£400 on smashing pumpkins due to the airing of their music on Radio 1

Try to imagine todays music scene without John Peel - it would be a very differnet animal...

I was not a religious (or even particularly regular) listener to his shows, but have been very solemn since I heard the news yesterday afternoon.

A truly great man who shaped the music industry with his love of new music. Will be sorely missed and my thoughts are with his family and friends.
