Playstation 2 Modchip

Post by Colin »

Does anyone know where I can get a Modchip for a Playstation 2 from? I've mailed a few places but no one seems to do them anymore due to new law/legislation :?

Cheers
Colin

Yep, the normal one, not the new slimline one.

Got one sat in my desk draw at work you can buy. Don't come with any fitting instructions but the can be found on the web under the manufactures web site. I'll have a look tomorrow for you and let you know what it is.

Also instead of a chip, how about a hard drive for your PS2. Having mine fitted tomorrow.
All you need are, 120gb HDD, new official PS2 memory card and the network adapter and a copy of Ridge Racer!

Each game is about 2gb and you can copy just about any game to the hard drive, even downloaded and copied games.

The HDD costs about £50-£60, memory card about £15 and the network adapter about £20. The software that I can get hold is to make it all work is about £25. You are looking at about £120 all in complete with a number of games that I can get hold of, choose between over 150 of em!!

Hard drivea are the way forward, no fecking with the insides and much safer.

Plus you just go to your local vid shop, get brand new games, and store on hard drive for £2.00

Jobs a good un

Are these the ones that require you to solder to about 15 places on the ps2 board? Had a look at doing one for a mate and there were some solders on to surface mount resistors and onto the pins of very small chips …... if your gonna do it you'll need a lot of patience!

HD loader the easiest way but ive heard it don't work with all games but does speed up loading times? Dunno if anyone else knows different? :?:

Cheers

Nope no soldering, just plug in the hard drive to the network adapter and the to the PS2 as per the connections on the PS2, pop in the memory card with the software on, pop in ridge racer and switch on and he p[resto it all loads up and works....easy!!

Sounds nice :D

Halfway there as i got a network card already in it...

I presume Ridge racer has some exploit that allows the crackers to get their software onto the HD?

Similar to how X box users used mech warrior and a specially 'crafted' save file to start the linux thing off.

Not sure. I know it needs something from the game but there is a list of about 100 PS1 games that it works with but we use Ridge Racer as we know it works!

I got this working after spending a bit of time figuring it out on Saturday.

The explot is not with a specific game. Instead, the exploit is with the way the PS2 reads a PS1 game. Those fine hackers have been able to find a way of putting a program onto the memory card which is "triggered" by a playstation 1 original game.

Mine is setup to be triggered by one of 200+ (PAL) ps1 games and I currently use Crash Bandicoot 2. All that is needed is a genuine Sony PS2 memory card and an original PS1 game. The PS2 doesn't need to be modified in any way except that you need a method of getting the necessary files onto the memory card

Furthermore, if you want to run games of the hard drive then you'll need the Sony network adapter and any hard drive bigger than 40gb. Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas is a pleasure to play now that load times are reduced 8)

Yep mine is all up and working to.
I have got a 120gb HDD which is currently the biggest you can use, but the do have new software oud which means you can use a 200gb HDD.
I think that I have got about 10 games on my HDD - NFS Underground 2 is also good to play as it loads really quickly!

wow thats brilliant, the hard drive very big? just thinking bout having it in your car!!

is the hard drive legal? cause im suprised they bought it out when u could just rent a game and copy it to the hard drive instead of buying it which means there sales will drop big time.

cheers aj

You need a PS1 game just to boot up the memory card that has the software on it.
