K series - metalic screaming noise

Post by Scott »

Do they all do it?

it sounds similar to a cat heatshield 'buzz', but around 3krpm upwards the car just screams out thats its being thrashed. Sounds like a really highly cammed honda, that metalic roaring noise.

All 214's ive seen burning it off down the road have this sound, so im not overly worried, but i just wondered if anyone knew exactly what caused it?

It's the hamsters claws catching on the cogs at high speed

Now I was always led to believe it was the heatshield for the cat, but when I replaced the centre pipe on the 214 I took the cat off, heatshield was fine but on knocking the downpipe it made the rattly noise, so it's somewhere between manifold and cat, said I'd look at it later, that was 6 months ago!

Can't say I've noticed it on mine. It's pretty quiet up to 3-4k and then it sings. It's not a quiet lump, but it doesn't sound like its in pain.

The K Series Roar is, for me, one of its best features. That and being lightweight and powerful (relatively) :D

When I drove my dads K series 214GSi mpi, it sounded very harsh and unpleasant. It's engine note was not it's best feature. Sorry about that, awaiting a argument now.. :P
Sounds like some of the baffles in your Zorst may be on the way out though Scott..

You must have something wrong with yours then cause as soon as you hit about 3-3.5k revs is makes a beastly roar it is very loud but i like the noise and people have actually commented on it to me in a good way.

My exhaust rattles at 2.9-3k i don't know if your getting thi same rattle.

Both my K-series cars have had this to a certain extent

Doesn't sound bad, just a noticable sound

I like the k-series roar as well :)

I had it on me 214. It got worse and worse until it was so bad it even rattled on tickover. i took it to rover (i knew someone who worked there) and he sed just stick a screw thru the cat thats all we do. so i did and it pretty much stopped it. still passed the mot with the screw in aswell

IS that to fix the usual problem of the CAT heatshield coming loose ?

If you put a screw in the cat is will prolly break the monolyth, which will end up traveling down the pipe and choking up the silencers downstream of the CAT. Therefore you will have a very slow car with a knakered CAT and exhaust.
Been there and done it I am afraid, athough it wasn't me that broke the CAT...

The k-series does have a ally roar. but as for rattles- check the manifold heat sheild too- they all go at some point and make a right rattle.

get 4 large hose clips undo them all and make 2 join eachother and wrap round heat sheild....

its what we used to do at rover

it doesnt have a stove, but im more convinced its exhaust as it reverberates really bad when cold, makes the whole car buzz, well annoying! Still, ill live with it!

It may be just the baffles inside one of your silencers then Scott. My dads 216 does it although on that it's on the overrun. New silencer can't be too expensive..

It is one of 3 things, either the heat shield on the cat or the internals of the car or in my case the front pipe has gone
