820 turbo vitesse sport, wont start...

Post by vitesse-sport »

hi, i have just bought an m-reg vitesse sport turbo,
first off i bought the car as a none runner due to an immobiliser problem.
basically my friend who knows a little about the immob's on rovers fixed it in seconds :)
car had been stood for around 6 months, fired straight up and purred like a kitten! (well chuffed)

so off we went,

while driving i noticed that you had to be shy with the throttle cos' if you gave it too much it would have a severe power cut for a sec then return to normal.

i also noticed that there was a small amount of smoke creeping up the car, which later turned out to be a poorly un-installed car phone shorting out on the gear stick! :(

back to the miss fire?
the problem got progressively worse and basically sounded like the cylinders were shutting down, power was lost and it would'nt start after that.

fuel pump runs, have spark, just no fire!

i do really like this car and want to keep it just can figure out if its related or not?

any help appreciated!

the violent mis fire / power cut you got when using full throttle will be the BOOST CUT. The ecu shuts the engine down when the ecu see's too much boost.

This wouldnt start it from starting, but i would do a compression test to check there is no internal damage.

Ask your friend what he did with the immobiliser, and try it again.

thanks scott, i was thinking crank sensor?
i think he went in the drivers door card to re-set the immob?

how do i check the boost thingy?
the engine appears to still have full compression too........

crank sensor possibly.

if the gearbox has been replaced recently, check no ones pulled the wires. Or try to give the wires w iggle whilst starting...

it should still start with a poorly cap/arm/leads, just not run nicely.

check for spark at the king lead, and each cylinder.

also, if your happy enough with the car, you could start a minor service if the history is unknown, and just go and get a cap and arm and some spark plugs bout 25quid then you can rule them out.

then look at the boost cut issue as overboosting is a good way to kill an engine (piston damage).

Deffo sounds like crank sensor or cam angle sensor to me :)

it has been well serviced according to the history iirc,

there is a receipt for a gearbox overhaul, but that was back in '03

When i got my vitty, it was running like a dog between 2.5k and 3.5k, crank angle sensor cured it :).

But mine is wasted spark which relies soley on the Crank sensor for the spark and revcounter.

There are 2 types of crank sensor, one with a tail of wire one without, mine was the one without, and was part number NSC100390, which i got from andrew page, rimmer bros also sell them :) Oh and mine was £28

The burny smell could be the resistor pack on the heater giving up.

OK re-reading the original post, also check ALL the hoses coming from/to the turbo, for splits/holes and security of connection.

Unplug the throttle sensor. Use a multimetre to check for signal while opening and closing the throttle. With the ingnition on ofcourse.

I'm saying coolant temp sensor... having to be light on the throttle... not starting... I've been there before with my 214.

New CTS and it was fine :)
