I personally think that for people who dont care about speed or revving the engine then a diesel is better than a small engined petrol. They're more economical and generally not under as much stress.

Speaking from some experience.
My wife bought a Rover 400 bubble hatch specifically because you could get our pushchair in the boot more easily than a Golf, Astra or Escort. We actually took the pushchair around a few second-hand dealers to check what "worked" and what didn't.
We've had several pushchairs
, but those fancy three-wheelers are both wide and don't fold flat so you need a wide, deep and longish boot. 400/45 saloon has a huge boot if she will do without the hatchback.
Rover 200 bubble/Fiesta etc won't leave room for shopping etc.
Only thing with all of those is, as the nipper gets bigger, bending down to get him/her in and out of the baby seat in a "normal" car will become a pain in the back - especially if they have bigger than average kids like us (who tend to walk later because they are heavier). My wife then got an early Land Rover Discovery because we needed a double buggy...the Disco was something we came to regret, but that's another story.
Smallish, but tall 4x4/MPV/Van based car (Berlingo) etc would be preferable - if probably out of budget.
Hope that's some food for thought...

I would go for a bubble shape 414/416 hatch
plenty of space, cheap parts, easy to repair and cheap to insure.
