Volvo 850 T5

Post by malcolm_durant »

I know they're pretty damn quick, but does anyone know exactly how quick T5's are...?? :?

Bruv in Law's just bought one (estate I think) and I'd be quite annoyed if he's got a quicker car than me (Vit Sport).

I'd never actually race him, but it's important when we're having the old "my car/house/TV/socket set/pen!s is better than yours" chats over the BBQ in the summer...

Arrogantly yours!

If both cars are std, he will eat you alive I'm afraid.
If he has the police spec car, don't even think about going up against him!

Having had a couple of traffic officers confirm, on the volvo forums seeing as the gf has a T4, the traffic police T5's are modified with uprated suspension etc, and no under bonnet mods, though there are always the stories of police ones having bleed valves in them etc, which I take with a pinch of salt, you'd expect the police to go for the RICA tuning over a dodgy bleed valve.

I've been in an S70 T5, and wasn't overly impressed. Without sounding too much like an arrogant chocolate starfish, mine would eat and crap it. He admitted the T4 was faster than his, T4 runs a 14.71 @ 98.6mph (2.5 60ft)

That said, I would still reckon it would see of a Vittesse Sport, no offence to the Vittesse, I always thought these T5's were silly fast until I actually got in one, even allowing for the fact they are quiet and smooth, it was not anywhere near as quick as you would expect. Apparently with a RICA tuning chip they can be made to produce nigh on 300 BHP, this is debated obviously, but in this form they can be pretty impressive on the motorways.

Apparently Herefordshire police have a heavily modified T5 that will do 211MPH. My m8s brother in law used to be a mechanic there.

i would have thought a Vitesse Sport be a good match for a standard T5, T5-R or 850 R no, Vitesse Sport is 0-60 in 7.3 seconds and 143mph.

I'm pretty sure at least one of local Police T5's is modded. I saw one accelerate from a standstill right outside our home, chasing a stolen car. OK, so it was external observation and I have no numbers, but it was running an external wastegate (non-recirc) and it was VERY fast, waaay faster than my Vitesse...........

Ex police and "seriously fettled" 300+hp Nordic starfighter

http://www.216turbo.com/images/CRX/t5.mpg

It was very cold and very slipery - and the Rex ran 14.2 - but the volvo driver spent the next 15 mins admiring 1600cc's of Honda power!

I have to say the volvo might win that one, Raced my GSI aganst the T5 nothing in it really. More mid range power in the volvo but the gsi is lighter so a bit faster from the line. One thing I would say the Volvo figures are real and the rover one's are a joke. Had the Volvo on a rolling road and it made 207bhp at the wheels I think the book is 225 at the fly this is in an auto. The rover could only make 164 at the wheels. All in all I would think before racing one would have a real chance of getting betten. :?

P.S they have better brakes than Rovers

Hopefully i should be ok then with 209.9 at the wheels :D :D

Yea i agree that T5's are seriously quick and i am always impressed when i see one go.

The 850 R is just too fast for its size!

Anyone know how fast the old Volvo 240 turbos were?
Parkers doesn't list them
I'm pretty sure they were 200bhp
I dont know what capacity engine they were though, my parents used to have a 2.1 Nasp (131bhp I think), seems likely it was the same engine?

One of those would be very very stealthy, nobody expects a 240 to go fast... :)

Stupidly solid too. Dad had an escort go into the back of him, the escort was squashed by about a foot, the volvo had a bent towbar!

Hmmm...firstly I hope he "only" has a T5 and secondly I might concentrate on the value for money aspects of mine then!! :P

Thanks guys!
