Re: Cheapies for sale!
Think I would rather just use it. Even though I dont need it.
Why is a car that is MOT'd, and only needs a starter only worth an offer of £100, i think that is taking the michael a little.
But thanks for making an offer in the first place.

Re: Cheapies for sale!
why dont u just get the starter and the abs ring sorted and sell it as a fully working car?
i have both parts.
i have both parts.
Re: Cheapies for sale!
That's fair enough, I wasn't trying to make the lowest and most insulting offer, just a fair reflection of its value in the marketplace. Sadly, older second hand cars are ten a penny and worth very little these days..stevedx wrote:Think I would rather just use it. Even though I dont need it.

Of course, you might get someone prepared to pay more - hope you do!
As Paul has said, I would fix the problems and sell it as a going concern, cars are always worth more when they don't need any work. Didn't know the ABS was iffy too though!

Re: Cheapies for sale!
I dont have the parts to fix it,
starter i could probably do, if I had it.
ABS ring, no idea what that is, never mentioned abs, I said the sender unit for the speedo, that I wouldnt have a clue how to fix but been told its only a small job.
It is a fully working car, just a couple of little jobs that need doing. Little jobs have never put me off buying a car specially when it is cheap.
Bgunn, i didnt think you were insulting me mate, I just find it hard to believe it is so hard to sell a car these days.

Very good
Not being funny though, but regardless of whether it is a rover or not, I have never known cars to be so worthless.
When i first started driving back in 1990 I paid 150 quid for my first car which was a really old R reg renault 12, that was an absolute heap of sh*t
And from these offers I am now supposed to believe that this 420 that is much much better then that ever was, is worth less, cant get my head round it.

Stick to your guns on the price mate, i know a car is only worth what someone will pay for it, but £250 is still a good price for a car with 6ish months mot on it !

Re: Cheapies for sale!
I've been watching this thread because I've got a car 'cheap' car to sell as well.
I'm amazed that people consider £100 a sensible offer - over the last few months I have scrapped a 200 wedge, a 400 bubble and a Mondeo. The two Rover's were worth about £110 EACH in scrap (and the bubble didn't have an engine in it!) and the Mondeo got me £124.
I know the scrap metal rate varies, but I think buyers need to understand there is now a floor below which it is not worth making an offer. Welcome to the wonderful world of supply and demand!

I see lots of comments about how much he *should* take, etc etc.
Fact is, I don't see any sale - so as far as I see it, he has two depreciating assets on his driveway, and no cash in his hand.
Yes, scrap value varies, and has been on the rise for a time - but the plain and simple fact is, it's a buyers market in terms of old second hand cars, and has been for some time. This is due to the simple facts of economics, supply and demand. Cars are generally better built than they were decades ago, and due to the British fascination with having a new car on the drive every year, there's a glut of newer models that are considered worthless on the market.
I withdraw my offer of £100 - considering that everyone thinks it's such an insult! It's funny how many people offer comment of what a car is worth, but leave no offers on the table.
Brian.

Re: Cheapies for sale!
So my offer of £99 is now the highest!
wooohooo!
When can I come and get it?
In the absence of other offers... and with the constant presence of people saying how he shouldn't take small offers (interesting that these people don't offer anything though, eh?)... I'd suggest that you either accept an offer that's on the table or just weight the fcuker in.
One thing's for sure... The car won't go up in value and the longer you hold onto it, the less it's worth.
Cochapman - you are saying that my offer (and Brian's) are not sensible... But they ARE sensible! The car is NOT a full blown running minter. It needs work and there are some unknowns.
For us, £99 (or £100) IS a sensible offer as it's just a punt on a car that could end up being weighed in anyhow.
If Steve had been offered £200 already, then a £100 offer is obviously silly... But I see no other offers.

Re: Cheapies for sale!
I'm not saying your offer isn't sensible, it just the OP has a choice, take £99 from a buyer or £110 from a scrappy. Sad I know, but unless the OP has a philanthropic streak and desires to see Rovers kept on the road, it becomes a no brainer. Particularly if you factor in the 'come-back' factor if something were to break within a few days (weeks?) of selling the car - in these days of eBay/forum negative feedback, caveat emptor (as long as it is done in good faith, of course) seems to have been forgotten.

Personally speaking, when I buy a car sold as soon, I never return to the seller if there's a problem - it's my car; my problem. Any offers made over the internet are subject to satisfactory inspection, so I always rely on my judgement.

Re: Cheapies for sale!
The 420 is a smart looking motor, and considering it's fully loaded, taxed & moted. I wish the interior of any of my cars had been that clean.
£100 is a slly amount of money, especially when it's worth more than that in scrap.
What are the intentions of a buyer? If they're planning to sell the car on then anything they say about its value is hypocritical.
I can't see what's "unknown" about this car - it only needs a starter. £10 and 30 minutes of someone's time...
A couple of years ago I knew two people who wanted such a car, and I wouldn't have bitten someone's hand at £250.
I'd definitely try the local rag.

Any car that isn't brand new (and even they can be at times!) is 'unknown'. You don't know how it's been treated, or what hidden bodges have been applied. Of course, a careful examination can determine most, but you can't spot them all.Punx0r wrote: I can't see what's "unknown" about this car
My final thought on the matter is this; if the seller can't be bothered to repair something that a number of commenters say is 'easy', then why should a buyer be prepared to offer more than scrap value?

Re: Cheapies for sale!
Your explanation of "unknown" makes perfect sense, but it seemed that this car had been singled out as unknown (comapred to the average secondhand car), and I couldn't see why.
Personally I would have replaced the starter before selling it, but that's just me.

Re: Cheapies for sale!
tbh i didnt really think it would cause so much discussion, just trying to sell a cheap car.
I would love to get it sorted, but basically I dont know how to change the starter, plus i am getting so much grief of the mrs and the neighbours, as it is in the way.
So i thought, stick a cheap price on it and it would go, never realised it would be so hard for it to sell
I thought someone will see it, fancy a bit of a bargain, and i know in the past these have been sort after cars.
ah well

Its not a small job if its the same problem that we had with a Rover 45. That was a gearbox out job - we had to take the diff out and replace the speedo drive ring (the part we replaced was only about £3!).stevedx wrote: ABS ring, no idea what that is, never mentioned abs, I said the sender unit for the speedo, that I wouldnt have a clue how to fix but been told its only a small job.

Re: Cheapies for sale!
If you stuck a starter motor on there, I can post you one for £20 if you want? + tax then i'm sure it'd sell for £350-450 all day long at the roadside.
Why people are getting in such a state over your motor I really don't know. Have you trollied 'em off somewhere down the line?

I think is a bargain and a half! looking on autotrader gsi's there going for around £400+johnnybbad wrote:Stick to your guns on the price mate, i know a car is only worth what someone will pay for it, but £250 is still a good price for a car with 6ish months mot on it !
Id consider sorting out the starter motor and sticking it up on autotrader or even ebay as i recon you would fetch more than £250 as it is on there.
I personaly wouldent sell it for £100 as its worth more than that all day long, i mean you could probably get close to that for the interior alone!
